The Forest Research Institute (FRI) in Dehradun is a premier institution for forestry research in India. Established in 1906, the institute's sprawling campus spans over 450 hectares of lush greenery and is considered one of the most beautiful campuses in India. The campus is adorned with magnificent colonial-style buildings that were designed by the British architect C.G. Blomfield, who also designed the Rashtrapati Bhavan in Delhi.
Visitors to FRI can explore the many museums and galleries on campus, including the forestry museum, the social forestry museum, the pathology museum, and the timber museum. The campus also features several nature trails, including the M.K. Gandhi Trail, which is a popular destination for nature lovers. In addition, visitors can also see the world's oldest and tallest teak tree, planted on the FRI campus in 1850.
With the outer Himalaya forming its backdrop, the institute's main building combines Greco-Roman and Colonial styles of architecture, with a plinth area of 2.5 hectares. For a time, the building was listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest purely brick structure in the world.
Overall, the Forest Research Institute in Dehradun is a magnificent institution that blends natural beauty, colonial-era architecture, and cutting-edge scientific research. Its contributions to the field of forestry and natural resource management have been significant, and the institute continues to play a vital role in shaping the future of forestry in India and beyond.
